The Pubs Around Nunhead: 8

The Old Nun's Head

Finally, beginning to reach the heart of Nunhead.  The Old Nun's Head, like the Pyro and the Man of Kent, sits on the Green itself.  It has just come under new ownership and been tarted up a little - it looks better for it.  So no longer connected to the Gowlett.  oh, and some of the prices have gone up (food, wine).

This is a pub with a lot of stories attached to it. Whether it is really built on the site of a convent whose Mother Superior was beheaded - and her head left outside on a pike - during the Reformation, I don't know.  I doubt whether there really is a tunnel underneath that runs into Peckham and safety.
